TRICLINIUM NEWSFLASH # 3 June 2011 |
Triclinium contribute to important
new textbook on Clinical Trials
Four Triclinium staff members have contributed a chapter to a recently published
Elsevier textbook that was conceptualised to keep pace with the rapid globalisation
of clinical research.
The book, Global Clinical Trials: Effective Implementation and Management
is edited by Richard Chin and Menghis Bairu, two prominent scientists and business
professionals who have extensive experience in clinical development of new therapies.
The publication aims to elucidate current practices in conducting clinical trials
across a wide range of countries. It is hailed as the first textbook that explores
the principles and practice of global clinical trials.
Chapter 13 of the book, entitled Clinical Trials in South Africa gives a thorough
overview of the growth of clinical trials, current research infrastructures, healthcare
system, regulatory and other related processes that make South Africa a strong
contributor to global trials, to a disproportionately high extent in comparison
with its relative market size.
The chapter concludes with a critical synopsis of the research challenges and
opportunities that exist in South Africa. This contribution is expected to further
highlight South Africa as a suitable destination for the conduct of GCP compliant
clinical trials.
The contributing Triclinium authors were Victor Strugo, Tracy Southwood, Marianne
Coetzee and Havana Chikoto, together with Lynn Katsoulis of The Aurum Institute
for Health Research.
